Herculaneum was by the 1st century one of a number of towns located around the base of Mount Vesuvius. In the year 79 AC Mount Vesuvius had a very large and powerful eruption, which quickly covered both Herculaneum, the nearby town of Pompeii and the whole area next to Vesuvius with a meter thick layer of aches and rocks. In 1738 excavation of Herculaneum was started and some parts of the town are now visible - even if it now laying in a hole many meters below the normal soil surface in the area.
