The Fort de Douaumont was considered to be one of the strongest fortresses that protected the area north east of Verdun during World War I. The fortress saw a lot of action during World War I and was one point captured by the Germans, but then recaptured by the French force. The area surrounding the fortress still shows that many scars of the World War I battles.
