The
Fort de Douaumont was considered
to be one of the strongest fortresses that protected the area
north east of Verdun during World War I. The fortress saw a lot
of action during World War I and was one point captured by the
Germans, but then recaptured by the French force. The area
surrounding the fortress still shows that many scars of the
World War I
battles.
