The Menin Gate Memorial (to the Missing) is located at one of the streeets leading into the city square.
The memorial holds the name of more than 54,000 soldiers who's bodies were never recovered during the many fears battles that took place near Ypres during World War I. The site of the Menin Gate was chosen because of the hundreds of thousands of men who passed through it on their way to the battlefields.
